So one of my favorite Thanksgiving traditions is that during the day Thursday the dudes usually head out to golf (my parents live right on a golf course) and the girls hang around, cooking and bonding, and watching the little ones. In the morning we’ll eat a big breakfast before the guys head out for their usually sunny but crispy outting and then we don’t really “eat” again until the early Thanksgiving dinner around 4. There’s usually some nibbling here or there but for the most part, we wait until our midday treat which my grandma always whips a big batch up of, consomme madrilene.
The story behind it:
Basically, she let’s this huge simmering crockpot sit out and as you please you can ladle yourself some into a coffee mug and sip it to your heart’s content. It’s a thin soup but bold with flavor, it packs just the right amount of heat to tickle the back of your throat without being too spicy. I absolutely adore it and it’s the only time of year I drink/eat it until now that is! I finally gave the recipe a go last week and oh my YUMMM. I can’t wait to make more big batches of this stuff to have on hand I could drink it every day!
What’s In It:
- 3 Cups of Stock (chicken, vegetable, or beef)
- 2 Cups of tomato juice
- 2-3 whole cloves
- 1/4 tsp celery seasoning
- 1/4 tsp pepper
- 1/4 tsp onion powder
- a few slices of lemon
Combine all ingredients except for the lemon and bring to a boil. Let it simmer for 20 minutes and serve with a slice of lemon.
You can also let it simmer for longer very very lightly with a lid, and leave a few lemon slices in there.
