Applesauce is one of those random snacks/condiments that I hardly give a second thought to but I often have on hand. It’s perfect in a pinch when you want something a little sweet but not overly sugary. Or when you’re attempting to bake the healthier version of something. Or when you have a really boring piece of chicken and you want something to add a little flavor. It’s a good catchall that’s often forgotten about.
Usually, I buy the little, unsweetened, packets of it from Trader Joe’s but I recently found myself at the end of the week with 6 unused apples from my most recent Imperfect Produce box and figured maybe I’d try making some applesauce in the crockpot as I’d once seen my sister in law do. But I ended up finding a recipe on the interwebs that said all you had to do was boil the peeled chopped apples in some water then mash them up and add a few things for flavor. That was all. So I gave it a go and guess what, it worked!
What I used:
- 6 apples, peeled/cored/cut
- 1 Tbsp lemon juice
- 2 Tbsp organic coconut sugar
- 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- Place the apples in a pot and fill with water so apples are halfway submerged.
- Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer for about 20 minutes
- At that point use a potato masher or immersion blender to get it to the consistency you like.
- Add the lemon juice, cinnamon, & sugar then simmer for another 15 minutes.
- Place in a sealed container and store in the fridge!
